Facundo Barrera
Consultant
Senior environmental and climate science researcher and consultant, holding a PhD in Biology with postdoctoral training in Biogeochemistry and Biogeosciences conducted in Argentina and Europe. Currently a Researcher at CONICET (CADIC) and Adjunct Researcher at Fundación Bariloche, with extensive experience in the evaluation, design, and follow-up of interdisciplinary projects related to climate change, socio-ecological systems, and sustainability.
He has a strong scientific background in climate–ocean–land interactions, biogeochemistry of organic matter, blue carbon, nutrient dynamics, and physical–biological processes in coastal, estuarine, subantarctic, and high-latitude systems. He has coordinated and participated in nationally and internationally funded projects (EU, UNESCO, BMBF–Germany, FONDECYT, ANPCyT), integrating fundamental research, environmental monitoring, and knowledge transfer to public policy and the private sector.
He brings proven experience as a scientific and technical evaluator, peer reviewer for international journals, and member of doctoral and postgraduate thesis committees. Additionally, he has prepared technical and advisory reports for governmental agencies, marine protected areas, and private companies. His consulting approach is characterized by technical independence, critical assessment of methodologies and indicators, and the ability to translate scientific evidence into operational and strategic recommendations.
Within the framework of CLIMAS HUB, he contributes an integrative and independent perspective to:
- Evaluate the scientific robustness and methodological consistency of climate and environmental components.
- Assess coherence among objectives, indicators, and spatial–temporal scales.
- Advise on the integration of environmental monitoring, climate change, and socio-ecosystem health into decision-making processes.
- Strengthen linkages between science, public policy, and private stakeholders while adhering to international quality and transparency standards.
His profile is further supported by experience in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in climate science, oceanography, and global change; training of human resources; leadership of scientific field campaigns; and interdisciplinary work in complex institutional settings. His role in CLIMAS HUB is focused on ensuring scientific rigor, territorial relevance, and policy impact, contributing to the consolidation of the project as a reference platform in climate and sustainability.
